you better recognize (yourself), the december edition

Last month‘s festival of recognition was so much fun that I’ve decided to do it again. Perhaps we should do it monthly? Thoughts?

Here’s how it goes: I share what I want to recognize myself for. You share what you want to recognize yourself for. And then we all rejoice, and I continue to try to shoot glitter out of my fingertips in celebration.

Here we go:

  • I ran my first 8k in at least 14 years! It was a Turkey Trot. There were people dressed as poultry. It was awesome.
  • I mapped out all the final tidbits I need to wrap up to complete my coaching program (after two years!). I was enormously proud of myself for this.
  • I made a very tasty pie with pretty pie-dough leaves on it.
  • I started intentionally practicing gratitude on a daily basis, but in a way that doesn’t make me vomit. Shocking!
  • I paid attention to my body when it was giving me some rather strong opinions.
  • I wrapped up the last of 12 coaching sessions with a really sweet client who has made tremendous shifts in her life, and she recognized herself heartily for it. That made me feel warm and fuzzy all over.
  • I returned two items to huge, busy, overwhelming stores without having a breakdown.

Hurray for me! Hooray for you! Tell me what you’re proud of this month so I can have more excuses to overuse exclamation points!(!!!)

Comments: Sharing our proudness is crazy difficult. That’s why it happens so rarely. Here’s how we do it: We share an accomplishment or an excitement. (We don’t have to get specific, or share any details we’re uncomfortable sharing.) This is also a very special space, because we don’t have to qualify our achievements. We don’t have to say why we’re excited about something (though we can if we want to). Also, you can let us know if you’d like us to keep our excitements about your achievements to ourselves. Otherwise, we’ll respond with nothing but positive showers of affection, so your achievements may continue to grow and flourish.

I put the real story of how I became a painter “out there,” even though it made me super nervous. Then I surpassed my goal in painting sales for my first year as a working artist! Yay!

And yes, we should definitely do this regularly. I love me a good celebration!

Great post, Kylie! I am happy to say that I am proud of a lot lately. Here are my top two:
    1. I have biked to work every day for the past 4 months from Brooklyn (Bed Stuy) to Manhattan (Union Square) and back. Even in the rain!
    2. I am making it through an illness and staying positive and strong.

Adriana: I am SO impressed with you for telling your story. That kind of vulnerability is so hard. But I really truly think you helped so many people by sharing it. And WHOA! You SURPASSED your sales goal?! AMAZING!!!

Sunde: Whoa. You are soooooo intense, I can’t even handle it. I knew you were biking a lot, but I had no idea it was every day! I’m going to have to rethink my former position: you could totally play rugby. Also, health stuff is SO hard. To me, it’s the scariest scary thing there is. I’m always impressed with your ability to laugh and keep going. Keep on remembering your resources (ahem, like your friends!). Kiiisses.

I ramped up my yoga practice at a time of year when I usually shut down and hibernate.

I signed up for pole-dancing classes! So outside of my comfort zone!

Jane: Wow! All those things seem like miraculous achievements for an entire year, much less a month! I can’t wait to hear what happens next month. I’m always so admiring of artists who share their work with the world — people like you.

Marsha: Both of those are majorly exciting things! I know so many people who have been getting into dancing (pole or otherwise) recently. Very impressed that you’re able to add movement to your routine, especially if you usually go into hibernation mode right about now. Go you!

I am proud that I am maintaining “forward momentum” :)
-I finally passed my road test after years of having a permit and failing three times previously. It felt great to accomplish a long time goal. Now to begin car shopping!!
-I started being coached by a pretty fantastic coach at that (ahem…YOU!) to focus on getting my career where I want it to be.
-I have continued to date despite mismatches and disappointments (and
at times preferring the cuddly companionship of my cat) remaining optimistic that a wonderful love match is out there.
-Even though sometimes I am tired or not in the mood, I have continued to write a music column once a week
-I took time to relax and will have more time to do so with some upcoming, gloriously unplanned vacation days.

I ran one Thanksgiving Turkey Trot in my life and it was my favorite race ever. We got Krispy Kreme donuts at the end. I had never had them before and even cold, they were delicious. Also, there is nothing quite like eating T-day dinner after waking up early and running. :)

Hmmm. I realized that I needed a day of rest and integration after working through some stuff during a coaching session so I went for a long walk with a friend and bought a lovely dinner and watched a cheesy holiday movie *instead* of forcing myself to try and work. I was very proud of myself. Possibly I was channeling Jeeves.

Lori: Goodness, that is SO exciting that you passed your road test. Even more exciting because of the independence and new-car-ness that it entails!I’m super impressed with your positive dating outlook. Dating sounds like it can be rough sometimes! Also, your keep-at-it attitude with finding your most perfect work is incredible. Goodness; I couldn’t ask for better clients. So proud of you.

Elizabeth: I’m going to suggest that our Turkey Trot include Krispy Kremes next year. That is clearly the one thing that was missing. That is remarkable and inspiring and wonderful that you gifted yourself a day of integration. Sounds like it was a lovely day, too. Jeeves is clearly rubbing off on you in the very best way.

I finished my coach training! And gave myself permission to breathe before worrying about mapping out my own certification process! And, hmmm… Finished twelve weeks of awesome being coached by a incredible pie maker!

    Thank you so much.

And tell Mary that is a really excellent photo. Really. Brings you right to the kitchen!
